Tasting Notes
Carménère is often referred to as the “lost grape of Bordeaux” due to its near extinction from French vineyards in the 1860’s due to a devastating phylloxera epidemic. However, this resilient grape variety had jumped continents and was thriving in Chile where it was “re-discovered” (it had been mistaken for Merlot) in the 1990’s. Carménère is now the predominant wine grape grown in that region.
Luckily for us, this dynamic grape grows well in the Walla Walla AVA where the 2023 Carménère was sourced from Margaret’s Vineyard. Unique pepper characteristics, a vibrant acidity, flavors of blackberries and raspberries- all create a lasting impression on the palate.
Smoked meats, herbed vegetable dishes, mild curries, and Central and South American cuisine pair well with the 2023 Carménère.
