Tasting Notes
John drew inspiration for this wine while traveling through South Africa, where Chenin Blanc is prized for its bright acidity, refreshing minerality, and versatility. There, a winemaker recommended Clone 982 - a Loire Valley selection from the village of Vouvray - as an ideal choice for Washington State. With the Loire Valley and Columbia Valley sharing similar latitudes, both regions offer exceptional conditions for growing Chenin Blanc. After planting Clone 982 at The Benches, John waited until the vines reached their fourth leaf before harvesting, following the replanting of nearly one-third of the vineyard after a damaging freeze in its second year.
The 2025 Barrel-Aged Chenin Blanc was crafted from a blend of individual French oak barrel fermentations. Barrel fermentation and aging created a range of distinctive expressions, each showcasing unique characteristics. Blended together, the barrels highlight the richness, texture, and vibrant acidity of Chenin Blanc grown in the Horse Heaven Hills high above the Columbia River. Soft lemon and honey notes pair beautifully with both savory and sweet cuisine, including teriyaki chicken, pork tenderloin, and spicy sesame noodles.
