Tasting Note
In the Rhône region of France, Mourvèdre is an essential blending grape in GSM blends. Also known as Monastrell in Spain and Mataro in Australia, this deeply bold, fruit forward wine can surprise the palate because the hue of Mourvèdre is often light to medium ruby. Washington State Mourvèdre (especially grown at elevation!) oozes red fruit charm and strikes a balance of savory and spice.
Our 2023 Mourvèdre, grown on the rocky, thirty-six degree slope of Shaw Ridge Vineyard on Red Mountain, possesses fresh red fruit qualities and bright minerality. Think homegrown strawberries, smooth tannins, savory mid-palate and delicate spice on the finish. Very little soil mingles with the vines on the slope of Shaw Ridge, rather roots must snake their way through the fractured basalt in search of water. The canopies endure strong winds and intense sun, concentrating each fruit cluster to perfection. Although John also enjoys blending with Mourvèdre, he feels this varietal possesses a beauty that deserves to stand alone. Enjoy this special wine with smoked meats and barbecue, aged cheeses, and paella. Mourvèdre is a shining star among grapes grown in the hot climate vineyards of Washington.
